    Le professeur écossais Oliver Lindenbrook découvre accidentellement une carte avec des instructions pour atteindre le centre de la Terre via un cratère en Islande. Lorsque le professeur se tourne vers son collègue Alec McEwen pour vérifier sa découverte, Alec se retourne contre lui et les deux s'embarquent dans une course contre la montre.
