Following the death of mercurial musical genius Ludwig van Beethoven (Gary Oldman) in 1827, a cryptic three-part love letter addressed to an unnamed Immortal Beloved turns up among his papers, sparking one of history's most compelling romantic mysteries. The quest to identify her among the many women Beethoven seduced unfolds as his trusted attaché Anton Schindler (Jeroen Krabbé) conducts a search that leads him first to a former acquaintance and then to other possible objects of the composer's affection, including (Isabella Rossellini), (Johanna ter Steege), and (Valeria Golino).
