Stardom is fleeting in the world of country music. This is something that Rayna James is beginning to discover, especially as she encounters small audiences on her current tour. Her producers, wanting to revitalize her career, encourage her to become the opening act for the up and coming young singer Juliette Barnes. The two women, representing two different eras in country music, do not hit it off. Juliette is strong willed and determined to become the next really big star. Each woman works to get a respected guitarist, the father of Rayna's oldest child, into the band. Rayna's home life is also complicated once her husband, with her father's help, decides to run for mayor of Nashville.
